The 2024 Craftsmanship Awards event will be held at a new venue.

Following several years at Windows on the River, the event that honors those who build Greater Cleveland will take place at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Aug. 29. For affiliated members of the Cleveland Building Trades and affiliated signatory contractors, the new location is fitting, as the stadium was built and maintained by the area building trades.The deadline to register for the awards ceremony is Aug. 16. More projects approved using one-time ‘super’ fund

As part of this year’s biannual capital budget process, state lawmakers agreed to a one-time spend of over $700 million to fund a wide array of additional capital projects across Ohio. According to multiple media reports, lawmakers are calling this one-time spend the “Super Duper Fund,” which referred to a $717.8 million spike in state tax revenues after federal COVID-19 relief money flowed into Ohio.The Super Duper Fund is considered part of the overall $4.2 billion capital budget, the largest capital budget in state history.

IBEW Local 38 hosts 29th Walleye tournament

IBEW Local 38 held its 29th annual walleye fishing tournament, with 25 boats participating in the friendly competition. On a warm, sunny Saturday, Lake Erie was calm, providing good boating conditions for the competition, which included members, family and friends. For eight hours on June 22, the boats were cruising Lake Erie, trolling for walleye before they had to return to the check-in station at the E. 55th Street Marina at 3 p.m.

Ironworkers Local 17 apprentice wins district competition: Will compete in national contest

A member of Local 17 Cleveland bested a group of 13 other Ironworker apprentices during the Great Lakes District Council Apprentice Competition, held this year in Cleveland.

Held May 31 and June 1, Max Meese took first place in the district competition, earning the right to compete this fall in the Ironworkers national apprentice competition. Iron Workers Local 55 (Toledo) Apprentice Mark Vajen placed second and will also compete in the national competition.

Amid a construction boom in Northeast Ohio, affiliated Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council unions are hosting a career fair to encourage more men and women to join their apprenticeship programs.
On March 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council will host a career fair at the Pipefitters Local 120 Union Hall, located at 6305 Halle Drive in Cleveland. Women, Cleveland residents and people of color are encouraged to attend.

Bricklayer Apprentice places 3rd at MCAA Competition

One of the two Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Local 23 apprentices from Northeast Ohio who participated in a national apprentice competition last month at the World of Concrete/World of Masonry in Las Vegas placed in the top three. On Jan. 24, Scott Schooley competed against other apprentices from across the nation in the MCAA Skills Challenge and took third place. Fellow Local 23 Bricklayer apprentice Steve Berlin also competed in the competition.

On Nov. 9, by a 5-2-1 vote, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority Board of Directors voted to repeal its Prevailing Wage provision. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority is a public agency that provides financing solutions for economic development projects in Cuyahoga County and beyond. The Port Authority partners with economic developers, government entities and banks to provide funding options for projects in the private, non-profit and public sectors. According to its website, since 1993, the agency has funded 150 projects, issued $4.5 billion in bonds and leveraged $6.1 billion in construction.
