New committee works to attract more women to construction trades

A new committee of tradeswomen hopes to break down some common stereotypes and convince more women to consider career opportunities in the construction trades during an informational meeting at the end of the month. The newly formed Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Tradeswomen Committee is sponsoring its first event the evening of Sept. 30.During the 90-minute session, area tradeswomen will lead the discussion about the career opportunities available to women in the construction trades and answer questions.Lack of information is the biggest block that keeps many women from even considering a career in the construction trades, said committee Chairwoman Doreen Cannnon.“So many women really don’t realize the number of options they have,” said Cannon, who is also President of UA Local 55. “There’s a real lack of awareness. There really is a lot of opportunity.”Besides hearing from women who have already established successful careers in construction trades, numerous JATC representatives will be on hand to provide information about the application and apprenticeship process.“We hope to make this event a ‘one-stop shop’ for anyone interested,” Cannon said. The committee has been spreading the word about the upcoming event and hopes current Brothers and Sisters from the assorted trades can help spread the word.Women at WorkWhen: Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.Where: Plumbers Local 55, 980 Keynote Circle, Brooklyn Heights, Ohio. What: Representatives from several building trades including Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Iron Workers, Pipefitters and Bricklayers will be on hand to discuss opportunities available to women in the construction trades. To reserve a spot: Call Doreen Cannon at 216-459-2900, ext. 143.
