Tradeswomen Committee Makes Charitable Donation

At their annual Christmas party, members of the Cleveland Tradeswomen Committee donated socks and art supplies to Shoes and Clothes for Kids. The Committee also donated $500 to the organization. 

The Cleveland Tradeswoman Committee recently donated items and money to a local charitable organization.

The group, Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K), held a sock drive from Nov. 21 through Dec. 9, and the Tradeswomen decided to help them out this year.

“We liked it because the items stay local and help children in need,” said Cleveland Tradeswoman Chairwoman Doreen Cannon.

Attendees to the committee’s annual Christmas party brought various items to donate, and by the end of the night, the group had collected a tableful of socks and art supplies.

The Cleveland Tradeswomen Committee consists of women from various affiliated Cleveland Building Trades. The group meets for the purpose of fellowship, support, to learn from each other and to promote a diversified union construction workforce.

The Committee also performs volunteer work such as making upgrades to a homeless overflow shelter.

Each year before Christmas, the committee also donates to an area charitable organization or cause. This year, one of the members approached Cannon about SC4K.

“We’ve been looking to get more involved with an organization and plan to start volunteering there next year,” she said.

According to the SC4K website, socks are one of the most common items kids living in poverty need, and access to them is limited. As such, socks are part of the school-appropriate package the organization provides, along with a week’s worth of clothing, underwear, hygiene kits, masks and other supplies.

Besides socks and art supplies, the committee also donated $500 to help the organization.

SC4K claims to be the only non-profit organization in Greater Cleveland that provides new shoes, school uniforms, clothes and school supplies throughout the year at no charge to children in need. The organization has positively impacted the lives of children living in Cuyahoga County by giving them the pride and confidence that comes from having new shoes, school uniforms, clothes and school supplies.

Their programs help improve school attendance, in some cases, up to 24 percent.
