Cleveland Clinic announces New Hospital in Mentor
The Cleveland Clinic recently announced plans to build a new hospital in Mentor, which will be covered by a Project Labor Agreement, providing new work for members of multiple trades affiliated with the Cleveland Building Trades.

During the annual State of the Clinic address, Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Tom Mihaljevic confirmed the Clinic is moving forward with plans to construct a new hospital in Mentor. The new hospital will be located in the Newell Creek development, between Norton Parkway and Interstate-90, at the I-90/Route 615 interchange.

Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary Dave Wondolowski confirmed the work will be completed under a PLA and will provide jobs for about 400 affiliated building trades members.

Although there is no official groundbreaking date set, construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed sometime in 2021. When work does begin, the structure will be the largest building construction project in Lake County this year.

The new hospital will be equipped to handle both inpatient and outpatient care, but there is also no official bed count for the hospital at this time, according to The News-Herald.
This project has been in the works for a number of years, as the nation’s second-ranked hospital system has looked to increase its presence in Lake County. Currently, there are just two hospitals in the county – both owned and operated by Lake Health Systems.

The Cleveland Clinic purchased the property in 2012, following a site plan amendment by the Mentor Planning Commission. Initially, the Planning Commission had approved development plans for Newell Creek to include a lifestyle center. The Commission though, amended the agreement and substituted a medical campus for a lifestyle center.

Now, the permitted uses on the parcels owned by the Clinic allow for a hospital, heliport, hotel, office building, retail store, gift shop, floral shop and parking garage. Initial construction discussions do not appear to include a hotel, however.

In addition to the hospital in Mentor, Mihaljevic also announced another major project during his State of the Clinic address, as the Cole Eye Institute is set to expand.

Work will soon begin to double the size of the Cole Eye Institute. This project will include work to create new operating rooms, an imaging facility, training facilities and a larger research facility.
Wondolowski said he is currently in talks with the Clinic regarding this project, including the possibility of signing another PLA.
