A mid-game rally by the Laborers’ Local 310A softball team was enough for them to reclaim the championship trophy at the 38th annual Cleveland Building Trades Softball Tournament.
The three-day tournament kicked off on Aug. 29 at James Day Park in Parma. The annual tournament featured two brackets consisting of eight teams per bracket. The championship matchups coincided with the seventh annual North Shore Federation of Labor AFL-CIO Labor Day event.
In the A bracket, IBEW Local 38A suffered a loss early in the tournament that threw them into the losers bracket. The Laborers’ Local 310A team cruised through the winners bracket without defeat, meaning that Local 38A had to beat Local 310A twice in a row in order to take home the hardware.
Local 38A jumped out of the gate and took an early lead in the championship game. Then the bats went quiet for Local 38A. In the fifth inning, Local 310A exploded and took a multi-run lead.
Despite a few late game game runs, the lead proved too much for Local 38A to overcome.
The win marked the second time in three years Local 310A has taken home the trophy.
In the B bracket, the championship match-up went back and forth between Plumbers Local 55 and IBEW Local 38 Credit Union.
The two teams combined for over 30 runs in the B bracket championship, with Plumbers Local 55 ultimately taking home the trophy.
As the softball tournament was concluding, the seventh annual North Shore Federation of Labor AFL-CIO Labor Day Festival started. The event included food trucks and live music from the Eddie Baccus Band with Ron Davis.
The kids pavilion featured face painting and balloon twisting. Jungle Bob was on site providing live shows with his collection of exotic animals.
City Council members from throughout Northeast Ohio came out to show their continued support for union labor in the area. Tents were set up to promote union causes and organization.
