A large first inning offensive explosion propelled the IBEW Local 38A to their third Cleveland Building Trades Softball Tournament championship in the last four years.
Local 38A secured the Division A title with a 14-4 victory over Laborers’ Local 310A at the 37th annual tournament. With the win, Local 38 denied Local 310A the chance to repeat as tournament champions.
Last year, in the Division A title game, Local 310A run-ruled Local 38A. With memories of that loss still on their minds, members of Local 38A came out swinging, as they jumped out to a huge lead in the first inning and kept the pressure on the Laborers by making several stellar defensive plays throughout the game.
The B Division title game played out similar to the Division A game, with Steelworkers Local 976 jumped all over Painters District Council 6 early to earn a 12-0 win and claimed the B Division crown.
The Steelworkers, who played in their first CBCTC Softball Tournament, made quick work of DC 6, who played seven games, the most games of any team in any division in the tournament. DC played four games on Friday night and edged Sheet Metal Workers Local 33 on Saturday morning, 7-5, in the semifinal game. Playing their sixth game in less than 24 hours, DC 6 had no answer Local 976’s bats.
In the Division A semifinal game, Laborers A downed Iron Workers Local 17A, 7-4, to setup a rematch with IBEW 38A.
The three-day tournament began on Aug. 30 at James D. Park in Parma, featuring 16 teams in two divisions, and play continued on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
