The Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council is calling for a local boycott of Menards stores.
Building trades members are urged to avoid shopping at the home improvement chain, including online purchases.
The boycott stems from the Eau Claire, Wis. based retailer using only non-union construction workers to build two stores in northeast Ohio.
Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary Dave Wondolowsk said Menards did not give union contractors an opportunity to bid on the work that will be performed at sites in Brooklyn and Mentor.
“I’m disappointed, but not surprised,” Wondolowski said of the chain’s decision to ignore the building trades.
According to Crain’s Cleveland, building permits have been submitted for both locations.
While no official timeline has been announced, Crain’s expects both stores to open sometime in 2019.
More details will be announced about the boycott and potential future action closer to the opening of the stores.
