Groundbreaking for new MetroHealth Hospital
The MetroHealth System held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 15 for a new 11-floor, 270-room hospital on its West 25th Street main campus.
According to Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary Dave Wondolowski, the project, which is being constructed under a Project Labor Agreement, will create more than 1,000 construction jobs. Work on the project should be complete in 2022, and the hospital is expected to open in 2023.
Due to the complex nature of hospital construction, which requires miles of specialized piping, advanced climate control technology and infectious disease control material and application, it is no surprise MetroHealth looked to the Cleveland Building Trades to construct their new hospital. Our affiliated members carry important and mandatory certifications, such as ICRA, which allow them to safely and efficiently perform high quality work building a hospital.
All patient rooms will be private, with floor-to-ceiling windows and space for family members. A large main lobby with an open community area is designed for local performances and community gatherings, according to hospital officials.
Plans also call for turning nearly half of the main campus into green space, with connections to the Towpath trail and RTA bus lines.
Turner Construction leads the construction management and HGA heads the design planning, architecture and engineering of the project. The building is designed with the goal of achieving high levels of environmental and wellness standards, including LEED Silver and WELL building certifications.
MetroHealth launched its campus transformation in 2015, with the demolition of the Northcoast Behavioral Health Care Facility and the construction of a two-story addition to the existing Critical Care Pavilion, which opened in 2016. A new 1,500-car parking garage opened for employees in 2018 and earlier this year, demolition of the Southpoint garage was completed, opening the site for the new hospital.
